BookLIT
(Learning & Investigating Together)
A project of the BEP and MTSU’s Service Learning curriculum, BookLIT is a month-long program led each semester by MTSU faculty and students in Murfreesboro City and Rutherford County schools. The goal of BookLIT is to encourage literacy in students and their parents through reading, discussion and performing book-related crafts and activities. It is funded by the Middle Tennessee Electric Customers Care Foundation and other local businesses.
In 2008 BookLIT collaborated with Read-To-Succeed’s Families That Read, Succeed program to help families improve literacy and the love of learning together in four elementary schools in Murfreesboro City and Rutherford County. 2008 Business partners include the Middle Tennessee Electric Customers Care Foundation, Publix, Panera Bread, Krogers, Arby's, First Tennessee Bank, Prentice-Alsup, and Third Baptist Church, Learn more at http://readtosucceed.org/familiesread.htm
The goal of this program, which places parents alongside their children as peer or co-readers, is for parents to gain a continuing interest in the books their children read for scholastic and enjoyment purposes. While the MTSU students can gain valuable hands-on community-based learning experience, the participating parents and children benefit as well through the development of a long-term literary conversation.
